Having your own family is a life-changing experience and dealing with the responsibilities entailed makes it a challenge, which needs to be acknowledged.
A few years back, a Mother’s Day special was released titled Red Table Talks featuring Willow Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Jones who openly discussed personal matters such as life, motherhood, and family. A clip from the said show has resurfaced on Facebook just last month and has gotten nearly 12 million views. Its topic was based on the question Willow had picked out from the bowl of prompts: “How hard is it being a wife and a mother?”
Jada took the ball and gave an inspiring response, admitting to the difficulty that motherhood brings as it requires constant attention to the family’s needs aside from her own personal needs. She narrates how she does her daily meditation, identifying the needs of each and every member of the family before adding, and stressing, the importance of what she should never forget: herself.
Jada explains how becoming a mother challenged how she handled her responsibilities, and how at first her entire world was only just about her kids. The time she spent focusing all her energy on her family subsequently took a toll on the same time that she could have had for herself to pursue her own things. She later realized that forgetting about herself was bad because it was making her unhappy and causing her to blame those whom she’d sacrificed her time for.
The lengthy response Jada had given Willow could also serve as a message to all mothers who seem to lose themselves in the process of caring for their family: you are important, too. And it’s okay to be selfish every now and then, to fulfill your dreams while taking care of your family. Just remember Jada’s words: “When you stop taking care of yourself, you get out of balance and forget how to take care of others.”
