My best friends Bianca Santiago-Reinoso and Kelly Misa-Fernandez are having babies! Naturally, we all wanted to pitch in and throw each of them baby showers. For Bianca’s shower, Kelly helped book the venue and for Kelly’s, Bianca took care of the games and the guest list. I volunteered to do all the decorations for both. I DIY-ed everything, too! I don’t know why I had to do everything myself; I’m either crazy or just really OC. But it was for my friends; I love them and I’d do anything for them. Arranging the decor for their showers was also something special I wanted to do for them. It was a lot of fun, a little stressful, but I enjoyed it.
Kelly’s baby shower was held in Paul Boulangerie. It is a lovely restaurant so I thought about what would look nice with the venue’s interiors. I came up with something organic and DIY shabby chic. I wanted to have little folded paper sailboats as a cute yet boyish focal point. I ordered some succulents from Greens and Blossoms to complement the theme and added some mason jars filled with tropical blooms.
Initially, I wanted to hang 3D clouds from the venue’s ceiling but I didn’t think they would allow them. Thinking about how to execute the idea, the solution actually came to me in a dream! The result? Cute little clouds suspended over the succulents. I loved it! I thought it was a really cute detail.
Since Kelly is pregnant with her first baby, we had the usual baby shower games lined up for her. We handed out forms for guests to guess what “Baby Fernandez’s” name is going to be. Guests also took a shot at guessing how big Kelly’s belly was by cutting just enough yarn to go around her waist. And finally, the infamous game of name the chocolate (poop) in the diaper.
Bianca is pregnant with her second baby—a boy. So we wanted the shower to somehow honor Bianca’s husband, Raoul, as well. Uli, as we call him, is such a sporty guy and he loves basketball, so Bianca’s (or Raoul’s?) shower revolved around the theme of basketball.
To execute the theme, I turned big orange paper lanterns into huge basketballs and hung them from the ceiling. I also made a diaper cake centerpiece with little basketballs and balloons in orange and blue. From shredded crepe paper, I made some pompoms to cheer on Team Reinoso!
